(THE HOW AND WHY OF WHAT WE DO)
By Roger Hild

The "Tsuro Dog Training Method" was developed by Roger Hild and has been evolving and growing since 1982.

"Our approach is a balanced approach built on a foundation of mutual respect. This is accomplished by learning about, understanding, and getting to know each other.

If the dog is to be a part of our world, it becomes our responsibility to teach him the social skills and behavior we expect. If there are to be limits placed on behavior they must be clear and consistent.

Since the limits are ours and not the dogs, they will be respected if we are respected. Our limits will not be followed simply out of some 'desire to please.' Intelligent dogs rarely want to please people whom they do not respect."

This is a dynamic approach concerned with how we relate to our canine friends. As I studied the various "how to" techniques, it became clear to me that training is all about communication.

- Effective communication always involves being clear and conveying all the information necessary in order to be understood.

- Most training approaches include a method to let the dog know what you want (the meaning of the "commands") as well as a means to reinforce correct behaviour.

A Unique Approach at Tsuro

The relationship between "you" and your dog is unique.

We focus on both the dog and you-the owner, and your desire to come together in a meaningful way. We meet the needs of both if this is to happen.

This is reflected in our philosophy and through the method of working together with a mixture of training exercises. Rather than focus only on the dog, we help you see the role you play when problems develop.

Of primary importance to us is the relationship between dog and owner.

Throughout history the relationship between people and their dogs has been recognized.

What are you looking for in your relationship with your canine companion?

We can help to define that relationship and determine the best program for you.

Anxiety sets in when the owner perceives something is going wrong in this relationship.

This anxiety causes stress in the dog. At this point it is possible to get caught in a very negative downward spiral. Our strategy is to interrupt this pattern and get things back on track. Started early enough, most "problems" can be avoided entirely.

Pups are reacting, responding, learning, and forming habits, if only by default. We must provide the education necessary to live in harmony. Training is never optional.

Each exercise is taught as a series of steps, each step must be learned before one can reasonably expect to succeed at the next.

Our teaching model has two stages:

1. Teach the meaning of the word or command.

2. Teach "relevance".

The meaning is taught in one of two ways:

- induce (lure)

- show (place).

This step is to teach "what" to do and get pup to do it on his own.

Relevance includes teaching the dog how it is to his advantage to comply, and this includes the concept of compulsion.  In effect what you want the dog to learn is that you (the owner) are in charge and when you say "sit," you mean "sit."  The dog learns that deviations are not acceptable, and that obedience is rewarded by praise, attention and no hassles.

We believe that effective training is very active and requires the owner’s energy and focus.

Lots of praise, and (when needed) correction, play a role as we move the dog to behave in line with our intentions.

It is our responsibility to let the other know what we want and what we don’t.

Our clients have the option to choose between two streams. Some that originally started with lifestyle goals for their relationship will decide they want to train for competitive obedience.

Competition requires accuracy, focus, and complete attention. All levels from Novice through Open to Utility are offered for either fun or competition. While all exercises are taught in steps as mentioned earlier, those interested in competition will have to be more focused in their intentions when working on "Stage 2" (Relevance and Compulsion). Each client will decide their own goals and will therefore decide if those goals were reached. Success is based on this process.
